What are the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation?

What are the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation? Tube. Duration : 1.17 Mins.

Atrial fibrillation tends to cause an irregular rapid pulse. In many patients, what they feel is palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and dizziness. The other issue is that atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke. When patients are in atrial fibrillation, not only do they often have palpitations, feel short of breath, feel a rapid and irregular pulse, but it's remember: during atrial fibrillation the upper chamber is really not pumping blood, its quivering. So, when the upper chamber quivers, blood can pool and blood can clot and so patients who have atrial fibrillation are at higher risk of stroke and many of those patients will have a stroke. The problem is if somebody doesn't have symptoms and they have a-fib, that's actually worse because they can be in a-fib for long periods of time and not know it and can lead to an increased risk of stroke. Older patients tend to have slower pulses and so when atrial fibrillation occurs, the pulse will often times be relatively slow and they don't know they are in it. And that's a problem because these patients are at a high risk of stroke and don't know until they have an EKG.

Meet the Catheter Ablation Procedure Experts at JFK Medical Center

Meet the Catheter Ablation Procedure Experts at JFK Medical Center Video Clips. Duration : 0.78 Mins.

In order to do an ablation for atrial fibrillation, you really need to have a critical mass of things. You can't just have a doctor who knows how to do the ablation or has the surgical skill to do the ablation. You can't just have a four million dollar electrophysiology lab with state of the art x-rays, with state of the art mapping systems. You can't just have an anesthesiologist who knows how to deliver cardiac anesthesia. You can't just have a staff of nurses who knows how to set up the room and assist the doctor. You need to have it all. You need to have a critical mass of people in order to successfully and safely do this procedure. I like to think that at JFK Medical Center, we have it all. We have everything we need to safely and hopefully effectively fix a-fib in most patients who have atrial fibrillation.

Our Lady of the Lake Offers New Heart Procedures

Our Lady of the Lake Offers New Heart Procedures Tube. Duration : 5.17 Mins.

Doctors at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana are among the first in the state to use new technology and procedures to treat abnormal heart rhythms called arrhythmia. These advances result in greater precision and better results for patients. Arrhythmia, or electrical problems of the heart, affect five million people each year. When the electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract are not transmitted normally, an arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat occurs. Arrhythmias can take place in a healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they may also indicate a serious problem and lead to heart disease, stroke or sudden cardiac death. Electrophysiologists at Our Lady of the Lake can now perform a traditional ablation using a tool called the Sensei X Robotic Catheter System, by Hansen Medical, Inc. This sophisticated robotic platform integrates advanced levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization. This combination provides greater accuracy and stability to the surgeon during electrophysiology procedures. Another option for patients with a-fib is called the Convergent Procedure, an Electrophysiologist and Cardiothoracic surgeon work as a team to combine the best of both traditional catheter and surgical ablation treatments. www.ololrmc.com

Atrial Fibrillation & the DECAAF trial--StopAfib.org interviews Dr. Nassir Marrouche (Part 2 or 2) Tube. Duration : 4.62 Mins.

In this video interview, Dr. Nassir Marrouche talked about the exciting research he and his team presented at Heart Rhythm 2010 that allows them to personalize atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment. They do catheter ablations and manage stroke prevention based on the amount of atrial fibrosis and atrial remodeling detected by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This fibrosis is characterized as Utah 1--4 stages and provides an indication of potential success, what treatments should be used, and the risk of stroke. Dr. Nassir Marrouche is Director of the University of Utah's Electrophysiology Laboratories and Atrial Fibrillation Program, as well as Executive Director of the CARMA (Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research and Management) Center. Atrial Fibrillation - Me Being Cardioverted

Atrial Fibrillation - Me Being Cardioverted Tube. Duration : 2.15 Mins.

Getting cardioverted after an episode of Atrial Fibrillation - I was put under using propofol (milk of amnesia) the same drug Michael Jackson was administer before his death. I posted this video because i thought it might help people who are interested about Atrial Fibrillation. I first had an episode when i was 33 in 2003. It happened out of nowhere and really altered the way i lived my life. I immediately was put on coumadin and warren . one to regulate my heart rythmn the other to prevent my blood from clotting incase i had an episode. When afib happens blood pools in your heart chambers which can cause clotting of the blood, which can result in* stroke or even death. No matter which drugs doctors prescribed we had no luck in keeping my heart out Atrial Fibrillation. It would happen at least every three months. The only way my to get my heart back to normal rthymn was to have a cardioversion each time. This procedure is show here in the video above. I never minded the procedure... i actually enjoy being put under. It was a short euphoric feeling then sleep which seemed to last only seconds. Upon awakening 20 to 30 minute would have gone by. AFter having a cardioversion 7 times i had a nurse video the procedure. seeing this video really upset me. i never remember any pain or yelling out. After seeing the video i decided to have a cardio ablation (a heart operation where doctors go in through your veins to cauterize the synapse nodes that regulate you heart beat.) The ...

How do you treat atrial fibrillation?

How do you treat atrial fibrillation? Tube. Duration : 2.60 Mins.

The treatments involve both treating the rhythm problem itself so that people don't get the rhythm problem. And if they do get it, also treating the risks associated with the stroke that comes with the rhythm problem. There's a number of options you have for patients but one of those options should include, for many patients, a blood thinning drug to help prevent stroke if they have atrial fibrillation. If you want to treat the arrhythmia, there's a number of different options that you have for treating atrial fibrillation. One is medications. And medications are anti-arrhythmic medications and we have about a dozen different rhythm-controlled medications available to us. The other alternative for patients with atrial fibrillation if medications fail, is catheter ablation. It's basically a minimally invasive procedure. With catheter ablation, a catheter is inserted through a vein in the leg and can be traced up into the heart under x-ray, using three dimensional guidance systems which we have here at JFK Medical Center. We can actually map the electrical system of the heart and identify these usual suspect cells, the areas in the heart where atrial fibrillation tends to come from. Once we have identified, mapped, and identified areas where atrial fibrillation tends to come from, we can then apply the catheter to these areas. Now, the catheter is a very special catheter. It can navigate in three dimensions. It has a temperature sensor on it. It has an internal cooling ...

CIBC - Image-Based Management of Atrial Fibrillation Video Clips. Duration : 3.62 Mins.

The CIBC Center continues to work in close collaboration with Dr. Nassir Marrouche and his team at the Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research and Management (CARMA) Center to advance the state of technology used for the monitoring and treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). AF is an electrophysiological rhythm disorder that causes the upper chambers of the heart to beat in a desynchronized, chaotic fashion that results in reduced pumping efficiency in the heart. This condition represents the most frequent type of cardiac rhythm disorder, one that significantly increases the risk of stroke, increases the chance of death, and diminishes quality of life. This problem already affects some 4 million Americans and the incidence is increasing within the aging populations of the world.

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening Tube. Duration : 0.27 Mins.

www.lifelinescreening.com During Atrial Fibrillation, the heart's upper chambers (the atria) beat irregularly or quiver, instead of beating effectively. As a result, the blood isn't pumped completely out of the atria and may pool. Pooled blood is likely to form a clot. If the clot dislodges from the atria, it can travel to the brain (or other parts of the body) and block blood flow, causing a stroke.
