Living a Longer and Healthier Life by keeping Score

Do you want to live a longer and healthier life? holding score will help you do so. Let me account for how.

Remember when you were in school and you got your report card? You'd look at the grade and discover how well you had done the past semester. If you did well you received determined reinforcement for your good work. If you didn't do as well as you wanted, you got feedback on where to improve. Optimal health is just like being in school again. But this time what you're graded on is risk factors which reflect your lifestyle and health practices.

Afib Stroke

Risk factors recount data about you and a definite disease that helps health care providers assess your present and time to come health. Each risk factor is like a piece of a puzzle representing your health..

Living a Longer and Healthier Life by keeping Score

Each risk factor that you have increases your chances of prematurely dying. Many risk factors overlap and are tasteless to many diseases. The five most tasteless are:

  • Unhealthy eating
  • Smoking
  • Weight issues/obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Air pollution

Other risk factors include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Low Hdl Cholesterol
  • High Triglycerides
  • Elevated lipoproteins
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Race
  • Age
  • Geography
  • Family History
  • Poor hygiene

Lifestyle changes are effective in mitigating most risk factors. That's why it's leading to identify and normally check the risk factors that are most leading to your optimal health. Meet with your health care provider and recapitulate you curative family history as well as your curative profile. Determine what risk factors you should monitor, how you'll monitor them and how often. This is you're your optimal health report card. Personalize it and make sure that what you keep score on matters to you and has the biggest impact on your health. When your scores aren't on the mark make the important life style changes to get your life back on track.

Let me account for how holding score probably saved my life...

Because I have a history of high blood pressure and take medication for it, I normally check my blood pressure and resting heart rate. One day I consideration that my blood pressure was normal but my resting heart rate was higher than normal. My resting heart rate is normally 50-55 but on this day it was 85. This is still in the normal range for most people. But it wasn't normal for me. While working out later that day I noticed that I became out of breath and tired sooner than usual while running at a slower pace than usual. I checked my heart rate the next morning and it was still in the 80s so I went to see my former care physician. During the visit we discovered that I had an arterial fibrillation or irregular heart beat. Citizen with A Fib, as it's called, are at risk of a stroke. The appropriate protocol is prescribing a blood thinner to sell out this risk. Had I not been holding score and monitoring my numbers normally I would have been in a high risk mode for a stroke and not know it. After six months my heart rate returned to normal and I stopped taking blood thinners. But I still keep score by monitoring my resting heart rate. If the A Fib returns I can conduct the risk.

Remember normal isn't optimal. What happens to most Citizen is what is normal. It's very normal for men to have a heart attack by 72 and women by 76. Neither is optimal. To live a longer and healthier life we must move from normal to optimal. Make sure the guidelines you set for yourself in your optimal health score card help you achieve optimal health. Don't settles for less.

The Inr Range and Anti-Coagulation

The Inr range for every health except heart valves is 2.0 to 3.0. A bileaflet aortic valve is 2.0 to 3.0 except that it is easier to lump these together with other valves and just say 2.5 to 3.5 for all mechanical valves. On-X may be an irregularity but the jury is still out on that. The healing journal puts out the most ample guidelines for anti-coagulation therapy.

The most recent just came out in June 2008. The most recent Chest guideline for atrial flap say that it should be determined using the same risk-based assessments as would be done for atrial fibrillation. In other words, as far as warfarin is involved a-flutter and a-fib are the same thing. This is a change from a few years ago when a-flutter was determined less likely to cause a stroke.

Afib Stroke

The Chest guidelines rank the evidence on which the committees base their decisions with each decision. The best level of evidence is randomized, double-blinded (neither the someone getting the medication nor the someone giving it to them knows either it is the active drug or the inactive placebo) placebo-controlled studied. The bottom level of evidence is an record detailing what happened to one individual. The level for the atrial flap decision ranks right in the middle (third place out of six ranks).

I have seen about 3,000 population at seminars on warfarin management. I get the feeling that about 70% atrial fibrillation is about right for a clinic that is open to any someone with any diagnosis. I think the best source is right here. I posted a poll a few years ago about osteoporosis with long-term use. It was not a qoute among population who took warfarin for more than 30 years.

In this video interview, Dr. Nassir Marrouche talked about the exciting research he and his team presented at Heart Rhythm 2010 that allows them to personalize atrial fibrillation (AF) treatment. They do catheter ablations and manage stroke prevention based on the amount of atrial fibrosis and atrial remodeling detected by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). This fibrosis is characterized as Utah 1--4 stages and provides an indication of potential success, what treatments should be used, and the risk of stroke. Dr. Nassir Marrouche is Director of the University of Utah's Electrophysiology Laboratories and Atrial Fibrillation Program, as well as Executive Director of the CARMA (Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research and Management) Center. AFIB Atrial Fibrillation Institute at St. Vincent's HealthCare, Jacksonville

AFIB Atrial Fibrillation Institute at St. Vincent's HealthCare, Jacksonville Tube. Duration : 0.53 Mins.

This :30 TV Spot is being used to help St. Vincents HealthCare in Jacksonville, Florida, announce a new Atrial Fibrillation Institute. The institute is a collaboration between cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and the hospital. It is designed to offer patients access to the latest advances from physicians working together to create treatment options designed for each individual patient. Atrial Fibrillation (AFIB) is the most common type of heart rhythm disorder or arrhythmia. It forces the heart to quiver rapidly rather than beating in a normal, rhythmic pattern. The disorder leads to a greater risk of stroke, heart failure and death. It is estimated that as many as 3 million Americans experience Atrial Fibrillation. More than 180000 people are diagnosed with AFIB each year. Atrial Fibrillation affects so many people in our community, says Christine Veal, RN, MSN, St. Vincents Director of Cardiovascular Services. In addition to being at a higher risk of stroke, AFIB patients are often living a quality of life that is less than what they want. Thanks to advances in treatment, new opportunities for a cure are in place at our institute. We are very excited about this chance to help patients.

About the "Mini Maze" Procedure for Atrial Fibrillation

About the "Mini Maze" Procedure for Atrial Fibrillation Video Clips. Duration : 2.12 Mins.

The Shands Minimally Invasive Pulmonary Vein Isolation procedure, also known as the "Mini-Maze," is used to treat atrial fibrillation through three small incisions on each side of the chest. Two of the incisions are about the size of a nickel, and the other incision is slightly larger. Through these "ports," a surgeon can use a bipolar radiofrequency energy source to make precise linear scars on the heart. These ablation lines block the irregular electrical impulses that cause atrial fibrillation. During this procedure, surgeons may also remove or close off the left atrial appendage in order to reduce the risk of stroke. Performed on a beating heart, the mini-maze procedure takes about three to four hours, and the hospital stay averages about four days. With the mini-maze, atrial fibrillation is eliminated in about 80 to 90 percent of patients. Please visit Shands.org for more information or to find a physician.

What are the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation?

What are the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation? Tube. Duration : 1.17 Mins.

Atrial fibrillation tends to cause an irregular rapid pulse. In many patients, what they feel is palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and dizziness. The other issue is that atrial fibrillation can lead to stroke. When patients are in atrial fibrillation, not only do they often have palpitations, feel short of breath, feel a rapid and irregular pulse, but it's remember: during atrial fibrillation the upper chamber is really not pumping blood, its quivering. So, when the upper chamber quivers, blood can pool and blood can clot and so patients who have atrial fibrillation are at higher risk of stroke and many of those patients will have a stroke. The problem is if somebody doesn't have symptoms and they have a-fib, that's actually worse because they can be in a-fib for long periods of time and not know it and can lead to an increased risk of stroke. Older patients tend to have slower pulses and so when atrial fibrillation occurs, the pulse will often times be relatively slow and they don't know they are in it. And that's a problem because these patients are at a high risk of stroke and don't know until they have an EKG.

Meet the Catheter Ablation Procedure Experts at JFK Medical Center Video Clips. Duration : 0.78 Mins.

In order to do an ablation for atrial fibrillation, you really need to have a critical mass of things. You can't just have a doctor who knows how to do the ablation or has the surgical skill to do the ablation. You can't just have a four million dollar electrophysiology lab with state of the art x-rays, with state of the art mapping systems. You can't just have an anesthesiologist who knows how to deliver cardiac anesthesia. You can't just have a staff of nurses who knows how to set up the room and assist the doctor. You need to have it all. You need to have a critical mass of people in order to successfully and safely do this procedure. I like to think that at JFK Medical Center, we have it all. We have everything we need to safely and hopefully effectively fix a-fib in most patients who have atrial fibrillation.

Our Lady of the Lake Offers New Heart Procedures

Our Lady of the Lake Offers New Heart Procedures Tube. Duration : 5.17 Mins.

Doctors at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana are among the first in the state to use new technology and procedures to treat abnormal heart rhythms called arrhythmia. These advances result in greater precision and better results for patients. Arrhythmia, or electrical problems of the heart, affect five million people each year. When the electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract are not transmitted normally, an arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat occurs. Arrhythmias can take place in a healthy heart and be of minimal consequence, but they may also indicate a serious problem and lead to heart disease, stroke or sudden cardiac death. Electrophysiologists at Our Lady of the Lake can now perform a traditional ablation using a tool called the Sensei X Robotic Catheter System, by Hansen Medical, Inc. This sophisticated robotic platform integrates advanced levels of 3D catheter control with 3D visualization. This combination provides greater accuracy and stability to the surgeon during electrophysiology procedures. Another option for patients with a-fib is called the Convergent Procedure, an Electrophysiologist and Cardiothoracic surgeon work as a team to combine the best of both traditional catheter and surgical ablation treatments. www.ololrmc.com

Atrial Fibrillation & the DECAAF trial--StopAfib.org interviews Dr. Nassir Marrouche (Part 2 or 2)

Atrial Fibrillation & the DECAAF trial--StopAfib.org interviews Dr. Nassir Marrouche (Part 2 or 2) Tube. Duration : 4.62 Mins.

See our recent article on this research at Personalized Atrial Fibrillation Treatment Using New Method to "Stage" AF at: www.stopafib.org See a full transcript of the interview at: www.stopafib.org Part 1 of 2 can be found at: www.youtube.com

Atrial Fibrillation - Me Being Cardioverted

Atrial Fibrillation - Me Being Cardioverted Tube. Duration : 2.15 Mins.

Getting cardioverted after an episode of Atrial Fibrillation - I was put under using propofol (milk of amnesia) the same drug Michael Jackson was administer before his death. I posted this video because i thought it might help people who are interested about Atrial Fibrillation. I first had an episode when i was 33 in 2003. It happened out of nowhere and really altered the way i lived my life. I immediately was put on coumadin and warren . one to regulate my heart rythmn the other to prevent my blood from clotting incase i had an episode. When afib happens blood pools in your heart chambers which can cause clotting of the blood, which can result in* stroke or even death. No matter which drugs doctors prescribed we had no luck in keeping my heart out Atrial Fibrillation. It would happen at least every three months. The only way my to get my heart back to normal rthymn was to have a cardioversion each time. This procedure is show here in the video above. I never minded the procedure... i actually enjoy being put under. It was a short euphoric feeling then sleep which seemed to last only seconds. Upon awakening 20 to 30 minute would have gone by. AFter having a cardioversion 7 times i had a nurse video the procedure. seeing this video really upset me. i never remember any pain or yelling out. After seeing the video i decided to have a cardio ablation (a heart operation where doctors go in through your veins to cauterize the synapse nodes that regulate you heart beat.) The ...

How do you treat atrial fibrillation?

How do you treat atrial fibrillation? Tube. Duration : 2.60 Mins.

The treatments involve both treating the rhythm problem itself so that people don't get the rhythm problem. And if they do get it, also treating the risks associated with the stroke that comes with the rhythm problem. There's a number of options you have for patients but one of those options should include, for many patients, a blood thinning drug to help prevent stroke if they have atrial fibrillation. If you want to treat the arrhythmia, there's a number of different options that you have for treating atrial fibrillation. One is medications. And medications are anti-arrhythmic medications and we have about a dozen different rhythm-controlled medications available to us. The other alternative for patients with atrial fibrillation if medications fail, is catheter ablation. It's basically a minimally invasive procedure. With catheter ablation, a catheter is inserted through a vein in the leg and can be traced up into the heart under x-ray, using three dimensional guidance systems which we have here at JFK Medical Center. We can actually map the electrical system of the heart and identify these usual suspect cells, the areas in the heart where atrial fibrillation tends to come from. Once we have identified, mapped, and identified areas where atrial fibrillation tends to come from, we can then apply the catheter to these areas. Now, the catheter is a very special catheter. It can navigate in three dimensions. It has a temperature sensor on it. It has an internal cooling ...

CIBC - Image-Based Management of Atrial Fibrillation

CIBC - Image-Based Management of Atrial Fibrillation Video Clips. Duration : 3.62 Mins.

The CIBC Center continues to work in close collaboration with Dr. Nassir Marrouche and his team at the Comprehensive Arrhythmia Research and Management (CARMA) Center to advance the state of technology used for the monitoring and treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). AF is an electrophysiological rhythm disorder that causes the upper chambers of the heart to beat in a desynchronized, chaotic fashion that results in reduced pumping efficiency in the heart. This condition represents the most frequent type of cardiac rhythm disorder, one that significantly increases the risk of stroke, increases the chance of death, and diminishes quality of life. This problem already affects some 4 million Americans and the incidence is increasing within the aging populations of the world.

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening Tube. Duration : 0.27 Mins.

www.lifelinescreening.com During Atrial Fibrillation, the heart's upper chambers (the atria) beat irregularly or quiver, instead of beating effectively. As a result, the blood isn't pumped completely out of the atria and may pool. Pooled blood is likely to form a clot. If the clot dislodges from the atria, it can travel to the brain (or other parts of the body) and block blood flow, causing a stroke. Life Line Screening provides preventive health screening services for stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, heart disease & osteoporosis.
