Reducing the Risk of Stroke in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

Reducing the Risk of Stroke in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Video Clips. Duration : 52.92 Mins.

To receive credit, visit: freece.com Program Overview Approximately 75000 strokes occur each year in the United States in patients with atrial fibrillation. Current guidelines recommend oral anticoagulation for high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation, but the inherent limitations of these agents lead to substantial underuse. This state of affairs has stimulated the development of new agents with improved benefit-risk profiles, which appear to be offer a wider therapeutic margin and low potential for drug interactions, allowing more convenient dosing without anticoagulation monitoring. Pharmacists must understand the underlying condition, possible comorbid conditions, potential of currently available treatment options (along with their probable results and possible side effects) and play an active role in educating patients on their drug treatment strategies and lifestyle changes necessary to reduce the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation. Nurse Educational Objectives Identify the under-recognized risk of stroke and/or inadequate prophylaxis in patients with atrial fibrillation and the associated morbidity, mortality, and cost burdens Discuss current and potential new challenges and opportunities in stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation Outline strategies to improve communication between pharmacists and patients/caregivers about the benefits and risks of anticoagulation therapy Pharmacist Educational Objectives Identify the under-recognized risk of stroke and/or ...

Preventing Stroke & Post Stroke Rehabilitation

Preventing Stroke & Post Stroke Rehabilitation Video Clips. Duration : 4.92 Mins.

The American Heart Association states that over 700000 people suffer a new or recurring stroke each year in the United States alone. 22% of these, die, making stroke the 3rd leading cause of death. About 5.7 million stroke survivors are alive in the United States today. Recovering from a stroke may take several months, even years of medical treatment, therapy, and effort from the stroke survivor. Many however, never regain lost functions due to stroke, leaving permanent disabilities. If someone you know is experiencing sudden symptoms such as a sudden droopiness or loss of function of one side of the face or body, a sudden slurring of words, or sudden extreme headache, call 911 immediately. It is critical that the person receive medical attention as quickly as possible. For more information on stroke, recovery, or rehabilitation from stoke related disabilities, call 1-800-GS-Cares.

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening

Atrial Fibrillation Screening & Stroke Screening Tube. Duration : 0.27 Mins.

www.lifelinescreening.com During Atrial Fibrillation, the heart's upper chambers (the atria) beat irregularly or quiver, instead of beating effectively. As a result, the blood isn't pumped completely out of the atria and may pool. Pooled blood is likely to form a clot. If the clot dislodges from the atria, it can travel to the brain (or other parts of the body) and block blood flow, causing a stroke. Life Line Screening provides preventive health screening services for stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease, diabetes, heart disease & osteoporosis. Call 1-877-237-1336 or visit our website at http for screening signup.
